Submissions and Writing Guidelines

Guidelines for submitting New Poetry, Critical Essays, Reprints, and Interviews.

New Poetry:

Measure welcomes submissions of poetry from both beginning and established writers. When submitting poems, please follow these guidelines:

  • Send no more than 3 to 5 poems at a time;
  • Poems must be metrical;
  • All submissions should be typed;
  • Each poem should include the poet's name and phone number;
  • A self-addressed, stamped envelope must accompany the submission;
  • No simultaneous submissions, please;
  • All submissions should be addressed as follows:

Measure accepts submissions year-round, but please allow 3 months for a reply.

Measure does not accept email submissions.


Critical Essays:

Measure welcomes submissions of critical essays on metrical poetry that has helped to shape the genre. These essays can be on canonical works or on contemporary pieces. The primary criteria are excellence and accessibility to a lay audience. Please follow these additional guidelines:

  • Measure will accept unsolicited submissions, but please query first;
  • Essays should not exceed 5,000 words;
  • Essays must be original work which has not appeared elsewhere, or author must hold rights to reprint;
  • These should not be book reviews (Measure will not be publishing book reviews);
  • Essays should use CMS endnotes where appropriate;
  • All submissions should be typed and double-spaced;
  • An SASE with sufficient return postage should be included if you wish to have the manuscript returned. Otherwise, a stamped, addressed business envelope can be used if you wish only to be notified about publication;
  • All submissions should be addressed as follows:

Reprints:

As part of its mission to publish and promote the best formal poetry being written today, Measure is also accepting reprint submissions from books of metrical poetry published in 2006 or 2007. Authors or publishers, please follow these guidelines:

  • Books must have been published (or will be published) in 2006 or 2007;
  • Person submitting (author or publisher) must have reprint rights;
  • Please submit entire book. The editors at Measure will select anywhere from 2 to 5 poems to reprint;
  • Please include business-sized SASE for notification;
  • Submissions cannot be returned;
  • All submissions should be addressed as follows:
